2020 Fall Training

Overview

The SDP is pleased to announce that our acclaimed training will be offered online this year! Our training will include three 10-hour Training Courses, two 5-hour Short Courses, and a series of Electives. Each course will be offered in manageable 3-hour segments from mid-September to mid-November. Below is a listing of our courses with links to full descriptions of each course. In response to your request, we added a new course this year Life Analysis Methods and Applications!  We also updated our Depreciation and Ratemaking Course to include a new class this year: Depreciation Issues for Assets in Transition! Also new this year is the elective Evolution of Depreciation -- Regulation and Iowa Curves.

 


 

Course Descriptions - 10-Hour Training Courses (12 CPEs)

 

Depreciation Fundamentals

This popular 10-hour course covers the basics of life and salvage analysis and depreciation. The course walks you through the data required for a depreciation study and explains the calculations in a depreciation study. The course is often repeated for a review of depreciation topics. There are no prerequisites for this course. 

 

Taking all recommended electives gives you all topics included in our previously offered 22-CPE Extended Training course.

Analyzing Net Salvage in the Real World

This 10-hour course examines how the components of net salvage (gross salvage and cost of removal) are recorded to accrued depreciation, analyzed using statistical techniques, and estimated and used in the calculation of annual and accrued depreciation. You will discuss activities that contribute to net salvage and how they are impacted by the causes of retirement. Net salvage transactions will be analyzed in relation to the original cost and current cost of the retired assets. The estimation of net salvage for mass and life-span properties will be discussed. Prerequisite: Depreciation Fundamentals or permission from Dr. Susan Jensen based on your qualifying experience or courses.

NEW! Life Analysis Methods and Applications

This 10-hour new course explains and probes life analysis models. After a brief review of actuarial and simulation life analysis models, some pitfalls of the models are discussed. You then apply the models to real-world property data and gain valuable insights to help you interpret the results of the models. You will also examine the engineering reasons that cause assets to fail or be replaced and the resulting removal cost incurred. Prerequisite: Depreciation Fundamentals or permission from Dr. Susan Jensen based on your qualifying experience or courses.

Course Descriptions - 5-Hour Short Courses (6 CPEs)

 

Depreciation and Ratemaking Issues

This popular 5-hour course is intended for the experienced depreciation practitioner as well as managers seeking an overview of issues related to utility ratemaking and depreciation analysis. The course begins with an updated class explaining how depreciation fits within the process of utility ratemaking. New this year is a timely discussion of depreciation issues for assets in transition. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Introduction to Depreciation

This outstanding 5-hour overview course begins with a discussion of the importance of depreciation and the complications inherent in estimating depreciation expense. Included in the course are segments on group depreciation accounting, life and salvage analysis, and annual and accumulated depreciation calculations. This course covers most of the areas included on the CDP Exam. There are no prerequisites for this course.

CPE Information

Attendees of the 2020 SDP Conference and Training can receive CPE credits. The Annual Conference is 2 CPEs. The Short Training Courses are 6 CPEs and the Fall Training Courses are 12 CPEs. Attendees must be present for all sessions and attendance monitoring within WebEx will be utilized. 


The Society of Depreciation Professionals is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. Complaints regarding registered sponsors may be submitted to the National Registry of CPE Sponsors through its website: www.learningmarket.org.
